Replatforming

Magento 2.4.6 is out of support. Upgrade or replatform?

By DEQIO · October 2026 · 3 min read

In short

Magento Open Source 2.4.6 stopped receiving security patches in August 2026. You have three realistic options: upgrade, move to Adobe Commerce, or replatform. The right one depends on your requirements and total costs, not on whoever is selling the next project.

What happened

Security support for Magento Open Source 2.4.6 ended on 11 August 2026, with no paid extension available (PrivateDevOps). Stores still running it no longer receive security patches.

That doesn’t mean your site stops working tomorrow. It means every new vulnerability discovered from now on stays open on your store, and the cost of standing still rises each month.

Why it matters

Security. Ecommerce sites are a constant target. Unpatched platforms are where card-skimming and data breaches tend to start.

Compliance. PCI DSS expects you to run supported, patched software. An out-of-support platform makes your next compliance review harder and may put your payment arrangements at risk.

Cost. Agencies increasingly charge more to keep end-of-life versions running, and every month you wait makes the eventual upgrade bigger.

Your three options

■  Upgrade to a supported Magento Open Source version. Usually the cheapest and fastest route if your current build is reasonably clean and the platform still fits the business. Expect real work on extensions and custom code, so treat it as a project, not a patch.

■  Move to Adobe Commerce. Makes sense if you need enterprise features, Adobe’s support and roadmap, or B2B capability, and can justify the licence. Much of your existing knowledge and code carries over.

■  Replatform to something like Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud or commercetools. Right when the platform genuinely limits the business, total cost of ownership is heading the wrong way, or your team wants less infrastructure to manage. It’s also the most expensive and disruptive option.

Five questions to answer before you decide

■  What problem are we solving beyond the end-of-life date?

■  Which of our requirements can the current platform not meet at any reasonable cost?

■  What will each option cost over three to five years, including integrations, migration and internal time?

■  How much of our current customisation do we actually need?

■  Who owns this decision, and when must it be made by?

Common mistakes

■  Replatforming in a panic. End of life is a deadline for a decision, not a reason to skip the analysis.

■  Letting the agency decide. Your agency may be excellent, but it has a commercial interest in the answer.

■  Ignoring integration and migration costs. These, not the licence, are usually where budgets break.

■  Comparing demos instead of requirements. Every platform looks good in a demo built around its strengths.
